Beneath the Plateau, the smoother limestones and shales of the upper canyon give way to black, ragged Vishnu Schist, which is among the oldest rock exposed in the Canyon. The appearance is of a ripped wound - descent beyond the Plateau is to go beneath the earth's flesh. The South Kaibab Trail begins with a series of steep switchbacks leading down into Pipe Creek Canyon, a sub-canyon of the big one.
